Troll Romance

Unlike human romance, troll romance is complicated by the fact that troll society divides relationships into four distinct quadrants: matespriteship, moirallegiance, kismesissitude, and auspisticism. These four categories are further divided into pairs based on which on which of the primary emotions (pity and hate) they rely on.

RED ROMANCE

Red romance, also referred to as redrom, focuses on the relationships that rely on pity: matespritship and moirallegiance.

Matespritship - Also referred to as the flushed quadrant, this is the simplest of the quadrants to understand, and one of the the two sexually-related quadrants, this one is more or less the same as the human concept of love. The symbol of matespritship is ♥ (rendered <3 in text chats) and a pair of trolls in this relationship are said to be matesprits.

Moirallegiance - Also referred to as the pale quadrant, the best way to explain moirallegiance is to say that it's roughly similar to being BFFs with someone, if being BFFs came with a side order of being someone's emotional counterbalance. Done correctly, moirallegiance also helps pacify more dangerous trolls. Its symbol is ♦ (or <>), and trolls in this relationship are referred to as moirails.

BLACK ROMANCE

Where redrom focuses on relationships based on pity, blackrom focuses instead on the relationships born of hate: auspisticism and kismesissitude.

Kismesissitude - Also referred to the caliginous quadrant, this quadrant has no real equivalent in human culture. The closest equivalent would be a particularly intense archrivalry. However, as this is the second of the two sexually-related quadrants, it also covers the idea of hate-sex. Its symbol is ♠ (or <3<), and trolls in this relationship are referred to kismeses (singular: kismesis).

Auspisticism - The least understood of the quadrants, even among trolls, this is also referred to as the ashen quadrant. It's also the only quadrant that involves more than a single pair of trolls. Instead, auspisticism is what happens when one troll steps in to help stabilize an otherwise unstable relationship. From what we know, this happens most often in regards to caliginous relationships. Its symbol is ♣ (or c3<), and the mediating party is referred to as an auspistice.
